CAROLE J. MCCOY

Postcard Art by Carole J. McCoy (copyright 2006).

Artist born native to Louisiana, my state is rich in it's influence spiritually, culturally, naturally. Our Eden took a punch, but we shall survive and return to restoring ourselves as the soulful pulse of this nation. Natural disasters shakes our spiritual fiber and challenge us to be better. My lesson has been to love my roots and humanity more passionately.

Donated: Jewelry “Drizzle of Chocolate”

Karen T. La Beau was born in Tacoma, Washington in 1967. Her father and mother were born and raised in New Orleans. Her dad was in the service, so Karen considers herself a “military brat”. When her my dad retired, the family returned to their hometown of New Orleans when Karen was thirteen years old. New Orleans became her beloved N’awlins, and her hometown as well. Life as she knew it changed after August 2005.

Karen’s Artist Statement-
“I always had an art flair, dabbling in drawing and painting. This stemming from the talents of my grandfather.  Once, I moved to Shreveport, I needed something to comfort me during my transition of a “new” life. I began designing jewelry. I began beading and have evolved to polymer clay as well as wire wrapping. Designing jewelry has become a deep passion for me as well as an outlet for the pain of loss that still hits every now and then.

The piece I have submitted is made of wooden beads with the pendant made of polymer clay. I call the piece a “Drizzle of Chocolate”.

Donated: Camille Memorial Piece

Artist’s Statement:
The day I knew I wanted to be an artist was when I was about 5 years old, which is about 39 years ago. I pulled out the drawer from my dresser and climbed up with my oil based paint by numbers paints. I painted on the ceiling. When my Mom saw it she was furious! To this day, I can’t understand how something so beautiful could make her so mad. Luckily, her anger didn’t deter my passion for art.

I chose the Art Institute of Boston because they had the longest studio class hours. I was able to either, paint, sculpt or print 5 hours a day, and draw 3 hours per day. My paint covered clothes were a badge of honor to me.

Along with art, travel is my other passion. Everywhere I went I created art. I learned quickly that watercolors were the easiest and lightest paints to carry in a backpack. Most of my travel paintings are still in my personal collection, but I do sell prints online and at shows.

I began showing and selling art in the 80’s. I had many solo shows, my greatest honor was having a show at Gallerie Tellunbrum in Switzerland.

When I moved out of my parent’s home the realty of working a ‘job’ cut into my hours working on art but never stopped it. I have never let anything deter my creativity. While living in a tiny home in Biloxi, I decided to paint huge acrylics on wood panels, which would have made a great comedy. The board was leaned against the microwave, and in order to view the work I had to walk around the island often turning to see the art hit the floor paint side down. My best friend would shake her head stating she could never paint in that house… my response was I had to paint.

Ironically I moved to Louisiana from Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina, although I moved inland. The summer before the storm I began taking photos of beautiful and scenic places, never imaging that many places would be gone before autumn.

For 8 years I lived in Biloxi Mississippi, over the years I meant to visit the local sights like the Brick House, Tullis Manor and other local attractions. The day I saw the inside of the historic Brick House, I saw it from the curb, a gaping hole from the storm surge was my window. I never saw the inside of the Tullis Manor. Driving around the coast post Katrina affected me in a profound way. Everything is fragile and temporary.

MERCEDES GARCIA

Mercedes currently owns and operates the Hairbrains Art-Salon in Santa Monica, California where she has incorporated her lifelong passion of painting with her other creative business - hairstyling.

Mercedes was born to a large family in Mexico, where she grew up with Seven siblings. At twelve years old, she left Mexico to live with an aunt in Santa Monica, while acquiring an American education.

After graduation, Mercedes completed beauty school and cut hair for seven years at her present location on Ocean Park, eventually buying out the previous owner and expanding the services offered by the salon, which now employs several stylists and offers nail, hair, and skin care, as well as a gallery of Mercedes Art.

When a serious car accident left her daughter a paraplegic several years ago, Mercedes turned to her art as a form of therapy - both for herself and her daughter. "I wanted to remind her that life keeps going on, and to inspire her to keep creating" says Mercedes, who created many works of art during this time, including a sassy Betty Boop for the hospital room.

Currently, Mercedes has over one hundred colorful canvases for sale in a variety of oil, acrylic, and watercolor. Her work has enlivened the ambiance of several area restaurants, as well as the homes of her Art-Salon customers and many other private residences.
